The
rhythm of life at Independence Place is determined by the residents’
needs and schedules. Daily activities, external programs, medication and
therapy schedules are different for every resident, and the staff tries
to accommodate individual needs. Those who are mentally able are
expected to manage their time appropriately, however, residents with
neurological or behavioral problems are given as much structure as they
need to achieve their treatment goals.
External programs are a part of the daily
lives of most Independence Place residents. The Social Services staff
and Activities Coordinator encourage residents to enroll in programs
sponsored by outside organizations that meet their personal, educational
and health goals. These include drug treatment and mental health day
programs, and G.E.D. classes. Internal programs conducted by Calcutta
House Inc. staff include addiction recovery support groups, individual
counseling, AIDS education, literacy tutoring and general meetings where
residents can bring up issues affecting their lives.
Rewarding friendships often develop between
residents. The camaraderie that exists among people in our community is
an important element in the struggle to build better health. Being
around other people who are moving forward with their health and lives
can be a significant morale booster. For those who are unable to make
progress against AIDS, having understanding neighbors with personal
experience in living with the disease can be a genuine comfort.
The spiritual aspects of life are important
to many residents. Volunteer religious leaders of different faiths and
denominations offer spiritual guidance and counseling to residents who
desire this. Those who wish to attend religious services are assisted in
doing so.
Seasonal and holiday activities have an
important role in the Independence Place routine. A number of volunteer
groups go to great lengths to put on parties during the Winter holiday
season, bringing special food and presents for each resident. For our
residents who have come from difficult living circumstances, the
generosity of our volunteers is a real blessing. Summertime Barbeques
around the fourth of July and Labor Day are relaxed, fun events that
take advantage of the beautiful back deck and garden. Taking the
opportunity to celebrate birthdays and holidays is important to the
entire Calcutta House community.
