The
building now called Independence Place, formerly called Calcutta House
II, opened in 1996. The facility serves 18 beds with nursing,
rehabilitative and behavioral care. Four adjacent apartments were
established for individuals with AIDS able to live independently, but
wishing to remain part of the Calcutta House community. A great deal
of care and planning was incorporated into the design of Independence
Place to avoid an institutional feeling, and to add to the quality of
long-term resident life. Even first time visitors often remark on the
warm, home-like feeling of the house.
The three above ground floors of
the house are connected by a central sky-lit atrium stairwell, which
brings daylight down through the center of the building. All levels of
the house are wheel chair accessible, and are served by an elevator.
The main entrance to the house has a walled, concrete wheel chair
ramp, eliminating any obstruction to freedom of movement for mobility
impaired residents.

The
main level of Independence Place has the dining room, community room,
quiet room and administrative offices. Meals are served in the dining
room and the kitchen, breakfast from 9-10:30, lunch from 12:30-2:00,
and dinner from 5:00-7:00. Dinner is served family style around the
long dining room table to give residents a chance to be together as a
community. Residents who are moving toward more independent living
arrangements may work with the kitchen staff to acquire or improve
basic kitchen skills.

The
Community Room is the central gathering place for Independence Place.
Resident meetings, volunteer-led activities, holiday parties and
general socializing among residents constantly occur here. There is a
large screen TV equipped with a VCR, reading lamps and comfortable
furniture. This is the only area in the building where smoking is
tolerated.
The Quiet Room is used for
private meetings by residents and staff, and as a place for services
to residents requiring privacy, such as massage therapy. Residents may
access the internet through the computer station there, by scheduling
time between other activities.

The
two upper floors have private resident bedrooms and two nursing
stations. Resident room have a bed, table and comfortable chair. Each
room also has a private bathroom with a toilet, shower and sink. There
is always a nurse on duty at one or both of the nursing stations to
assist residents with regular care, and to deal with emergency
situations.
The finished basement has a
large fitness and recreation room equipped with weights and exercise
equipment used in occupational and physical therapy. There are a pool
table and dart board for informal games. Staff and residents worked
together to design and paint the wall-sized undersea-themed mural that
brightens one wall.

One
of the wonderful amenities of Independence Place is the large wooden
deck attached to the back of the house that overlooks a beautiful,
protected landscaped garden. Accessed through large double doors from
the dining room, the deck is an invaluable extension of the living
space of the house during the warm months of the year. Even during the
hottest summer months, many residents enjoy a breath of fresh air
sitting at shaded tables on comfortable deck chairs. The garden
contains over 25 different plants and vegetables, which residents are
encouraged to help plant and care for. The kitchen staff incorporates
fresh produce from the garden into menus, when possible.
